CV Advice For Job Seekers
At Roadhogs Recruitment, we review many CVs during the week. We’ve been in farming recruitment for over thirty years and have learned a thing or two about writing CVs. So, we thought it would be helpful to make a few suggestions.
Tip 1: Cover letters. When applying for jobs through job sites like Indeed, make your CV and cover letter relevant to the job that you are applying for. We have received CVs for pig farm jobs, and they start off their cover letter with ‘I WISH TO APPLY FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT JOB’ – which doesn’t look great to the possible future employer!
Tip 2: List your experience. If you say in your opening statement that you have ‘X’ number of years of experience working with pigs, ensure that your experience is listed in your CV. Again, we see CVs that mention they have the experience, but nowhere in their CV is the actual description.
Tip 3: Make sure your CV is up to date. We receive too many CVs that are incomplete and lack a work history.
Tip 4: Ensure that your contact details are up to date. We can’t contact you if your email address or telephone number is no longer in use.
Tip 5: Keep your CV factual and to the point. You do not need to write an essay; that’s a good way to put your reader to sleep! Make your CV short, snappy and to the point. Try to include an opening statement—a summary of your years’ work—a summary of the qualities you have to offer and what you are looking for.
